suspect is identified as a 24-year-old man from the aurora area named james holmes. he was born december 13th of 1987, and authorities don't know much about him. they say he had no military history and the odd thing is that after the shooting he didn't try to escape. he didn't turn the gun on h himself as sometimes happens. he was just standing near that white car, the picture of which you saw a moment ago. that is the car he apparently drove to the theater and was standing there when police came out. he of dressed in black, wearing a bullet proof vest. had a gas mask because of the gas he released in the theater. he told the police his car and apartment were rigged with explosives. they've searched the car. they found no explosives. they're now at his apartment which is about four miles from the theater in aurora, colorado. instead of trying to go through the door just as a precaution, they're entering through the window of the apartment. we saw a moment ago the officers responding to the scene ripping out the frame and the screen of the window so that they can enter that way and this i

gathers new evidence, evidence that could make their case even stronger. on the same day that james holmes sat in silence in a colorado courtroom, his written words were speaking volumes to investigators. monday a haz-mat team descended on the university of colorado's campus, where law enforcement sources say holmes told police to look for a package he had sent to a psychiatrist. a law enforcement source now tells nbc news the package contained writings from holmes about, quote, killing people. the university confirms it received a package monday after the shooting. the documents could prove crucial to the case against holmes, according to a former federal prosecutor. >> to the extent he put in these packages his plans to kill people, that's called evidence of premeditation. and then the only issue is was he mentally ill when he sent that package. was he ill enough to be legally insane? maybe not. or was he ill enough to avoid at least the death penalty? >> reporter: holmes, seen here in 2006 at a science summer camp, was a neuroscience grad student who had spent his short academic life st

shooter identified as 24-year-old james holmes was arrested at the scene without resisting. he lives in aurora. investigators are searching his apartment at this hour, looking for explosives because he told them that he might have explosives in his home and his car. police are expected to hold a news conference a little later this morning. but so far, aurora's police chief says there is no evidence of any additional shooters, and the fbi says there's no indication the incident is tied to any terrorist organization. >> we've talked to a lot of witnesses this morning who have designed an absolutely terrifying scene. a man who was at the front right of the theater came in right near the right-hand part of the screen, fired something into the air, and then opened fire on the crowd. according to investigators and our own pete williams, he was heavily armed with at least four weapons on him in addition to the tear gas, he was wearing a gas mask, dressed in all black and appeared to have a bulletproof vest. >> a lot of questions because according to just about every eyewitness, he came in thro
